From 1998-2008, LakeNet participated in and tracked the development of global water policy since David Read Barker, now retired president, attended the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 as an NGO observer. LakeNet was granted special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2001. With the special status came an important responsibility to monitor the actions of several important water-related treaties, conventions and protocols. One important body is the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) which meets to review the status of implementation of Agenda 21, the policy adopted at the Earth Summit. Other key international organizations are the World Water Council and Global Water Partnership, both of which have been instrumental in creating the World Water Forums and the World Water Vision & Framework for Action.
