Convention on Biological Diversity, Secretariat - One of the key agreements adopted at the Rio Earth Summit was the Convention on Biological Diversity. This pact among the vast majority of the world's governments sets out commitments for maintaining the world's ecological underpinnings as we pursue economic development. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.

Global Environment Facility (GEF) - The Global Environment Facility (GEF) helps developing countries fund projects and programs that protect the global environment. Established in 1991, GEF is the designated financial mechanism for international agreements on biodiversity, climate change, and persistent organic pollutants. Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) - The Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network is a grassroots network of limnologists, ecologists, information technology experts, and engineers who have a common goal of building a scalable, persistent network of lake ecology observatories. Data from these observatories will allow us to better understand key processes such as the effects of climate and landuse change on lake function, the role of episodic events such as typhoons in resetting lake dynamics, and carbon cycling within lakes.

International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) - Established in 1889, the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) has responsibility for applying the boundary and water treaties between the United States and Mexico and settling differences that may arise out of these treaties. The IBWC is an international body composed of the United States Section and the Mexican Section, each headed by an Engineer-Commissioner appointed by his/her respective president. The United States Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) is headquartered in El Paso, Texas.

International Groundwater Modeling Center (IGWMC) - The International Ground Water Modeling Center (IGWMC) is an internationally oriented information, education and research center for ground-water modeling. IGWMC advises on ground-water modeling problems, distributes ground-water modeling software, organizes short courses and workshops, conducts research in practical, applied areas of ground-water hydrology and modeling, and provides technical assistance on problems related to ground-water modeling. As a focal point for ground-water professionals, the Center supports and advances the appropriate use of quality-assured models in ground-water resources protection and management.
International Lake Environment Committee (ILEC) - ILEC's mission is to advance international cooperation for conservation of lake environments and promote environmentally sound management of world lakes through encouraging investigations and research on rational and suitable methods for harmony between environmental management and sustainable development, and scientific knowledge on lake environments internationally. International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) - The International Network of Basin Organizations has the following objectives: to develop permanent relations with the organizations interested in a global river basin management, facilitate exchanges of experiences, to promote the principles of sound water management in cooperation programmes to reach a sustainable development. INBO also promotes information and training programmes for local elected officials, to encourage education of the population to evaluate ongoing actions and disseminate their results.
International Rivers Network (IRN) - IRN supports local communities working to protect their rivers and watersheds. IRN works to halt destructive river development projects, and to encourage equitable and sustainable methods of meeting needs for water, energy and flood management.
International Society for Diatom Research (ISDR) -
International Society for Salt Lake Research (ISSLR) - ISSLR was founded to establish effective liaison between persons interested in any aspect of inland saline waters, to encourage these interests, and to educate the public in the scientific use, management, and conservation of salt lakes. Maintenance of a comprehensive up-to-date bibliography of salt lake research is one of ISSLR's goals. The ISSLR research bibliography currently contains ~8,000 entries with 20-30 new entries added per month.

LakeNet Secretariat - The LakeNet website was developed between 1998-2008 by a global network of people and organizations in more than 100 countries dedicated to the conservation and sustainable development of lake ecosystems. The network Secretariat was a U.S.-based nonprofit organization governed by a 15-member Board of Trustees and supported by a team of professional staff. UNEP - International Environment Technology Centre (UNEP IETC) - In May 1991, UNEP's Governing Council took a decision to further strengthen UNEP's role in sustainable urban and freshwater basin management by calling for the creation of an International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC). World Commission on Large Dams (WCD) - The World Commision on Dams was born out of the IUCN-World Bank sponsored workshop in Gland, Switzerland in 1997.
