Ajit Pattnaik welcomes the participants at the opening of the first-ever national workshop of lake and wetlands managers in India.
Children from a village in the Chilika Lake watershed joined the group for a local site visit where participants saw first-hand a successful community-based watershed protection project in the upper reaches of the lake basin.
The Chilika Development Authority is a leader in the use of GIS mapping technology for watershed management and habitat protection. During the workshop, they demonstrated the technology to other lake and wetland managers in India.
CDA's Executive Director, Ajit Pattnaik, is a member of LakeNet's steering committee and is leading the establishment of a national network of lakes and wetlands in India.
Villagers in the upper reaches of the Chilika watershed planted trees and constructed erosion control berms to successfully secure their local water supply. A drainage canal is under construction which will convey the water to a reservoir.
